Report
The weather was warm and a little muggy. The morning started off with a lot of fog that rolled in at launch time. We started off the day catching fish in shallow water on topwaters. We were throwing Rebel Pop-R in chrome/black back - and Heddon Zara Spook in clear. We were working over flooded trees and bushes, and secondary points. When the topwater bite faded, we were able to pick up a few throwing Cordell Super Spots parallel to the shoreline and over submerged rocks. This was also a chrome/black back and was the tiny spot (C-24). By late morning, the fish had moved out to flooded timber and bushes in 8-15 feet of water. Here we had to work Gambler Swacky worms, and dead-sticking Gambler Studs in the tops of the timber. The bass were very finicky at this point, and would not take anything that was moving or falling at any speed at all. The bait had to be very still and falling very slowly. The Stud was watermelon, and the Swacky was green pumpkin candy when the cloud cover was still there, but watermelon/firestick when the sun was out. By the end of the day, we had caught over 30 fish, but were not fortunate to get a really big bite. My partner did catch about a 2-1/2 lb. smallmouth that almost gave us a heart attack because we had a double hook-up. I got a look at both fish, and his was larger so I flipped mine into the boat and tossed it into the bottom before grabbing the net for his. The smallie put up such a fight that it had bent his EWG hook that he was fishing the stud with. Awesome fish - you have got to love catching the smallies!
