GALVESTON BAY SALTWATER FISHING REPORT

Galveston Bay Charter Captain Bill CannanFishing has been steady in West and East Galveston Bay. Daily winds have provided for excellent drift fishing over reefs and around color changes. Water temperatures are ranging from 57 to 62 degrees. The warm water has kept the major schools of speckled trout in the open water bays in 4-7 feet of water. Until we get any cold weather for more than four or five days at a time the fish are not going to go deep. There have been some fish caught in the deeper holes in the bay during the cold snaps but soon as it warms up the fish are out on the shell again in full force. The water temperature dropped to 38 degrees the day after Christmas but has been over fifty since New Years Day. The speckled trout may not ever be forced to go deep this year if we don’t get some seriously cold weather.

Drifting shell, mud boils, and color changes has been the best bet in the bays for speckled trout. Throwing Saltwater Assassins in Chartreuse/silver glitter, red shad, chartreuse silver phantom, and pearl have all been effective baits. Spaying the baits with Stanley’s new "Spoof" shrimp spray has been the ticket, the fish haven’t seen this combination very much and the results have been notable.

Good luck fishing.

Captain Bill Cannan
