Laguna Madre Saltwater Fishing Report

Bay Fishing Laguna Madre on the Texas Gulf Coast

Lower Laguna Madre Fishing Report
for the bay between Port Mansfield and South Padre Island Texas.

The Lower Laguna Madre

The Lower Laguna Madre is an area of the bay located between The cut at South Padre Island on the tip of Texas next to the Mexican border and Port Mansfield Texas.

Approximately 30 miles of protected bay that averages only 3 to 4 feet in depth. Miles and miles of grass beds and crystal clear waters make this the most productive Redfish and Trout location on the Texas coast.

Fishermen have been making this their destination since the early 30's and it is no wonder why. The majority of South Padre Island from it's cut to Port Mansfield is owned by individuals as well as the State. The Mainland from Port Isabel to Port Mansfield is mostly uninhabited and also includes The Laguna Atascotia National Wildlife Refuge. This means that for years to come there will be virtually no development of the area to change its current appeal as a true jewel of the Texas Coast.

The low average water depth makes this area one of the best places for shallow water drift fishing as well as wade fishing with Light spinning tackle or Fly Fishing. The Bays location also means that the weather on average is clear and warm throughout most of the year. This part of South Texas has 80 degree weather through November and the fishing is great year round.

Salt water Fly Fishing as well as Light tackle fishing has grown in popularity over the past decade. The notoriety of the Lower Laguna Madre at the tip of the Texas coast has contributed to this in many ways.

With the development of specialized shallow water boats in the late 50's by some local fishermen, the once isolated and obscure areas of the flats are now accessible by those that know where to go and when. Many of the areas that are fished are only 6 to 8 inches in depth. Tidal fluctuation and wind condition make these areas available during certain times of the day.

The modern shallow boats of today allow guides who know the area to take groups of up to 4 to these very special places.

The Lower Laguna Madre is a special place that any true fisherman should make a top priority for the fishing trip of a lifetime. Come and experience with guides who truly love to fish this unique style of fishing that one will not soon forget.
