Lake Austin Fishing Reports
Lake Austin

Lake Austin is the 6th lake in the Highland Lakes Chain and was impounded in 1939. Lake Austin covers 1,830 surface acres, and has a maximum depth of only 75 feet.

Lake Austin is very fondly thought of as the best kept secret in Central Texas. The lake offers an abundance of various aquatic vegetation that holds the Hawgs. Austin has many areas on the lake offering hydrilla, milfoil, and pondweed.

The lake stays very cool year round because it is near the end of the Highland lakes chain. The cooler water brings out many recreational boaters making fishing during the summertime challenging, but can be very enjoyable during the weekdays, and early in the day.

The lake has been put back to normal level and the fishing and other water activities have begun.

Last fishing trip was very slow, only had a couple of bites. Fished shallow to deep and that was all that we could come up with.

Both of the bites came while fishing 18 feet on the edges of a (now dead) hydrilla bed while Carolina Riggin.

One bite came on a Gambler floating lizard (watermelon) and the other came on Gambler Flappin Shad (watermelon). Both rigs were fished with about 2 ½ feet leaders using ¾ ounce Gambler rattlin’ weights.

Next up we’ll be on Canyon Lake for a tournament – hopefully the day will be nice weather.
